When you buy a pair of shoes you think about what you need them for and what kind of outfit to wear with them. I know most people think what shoes go with what outfit, but dammit I am a proud impulse shopper.  The bottom line is you have to have a plan right? I know, we don’t always have a plan, but for remodeling you should.

How to come up with a plan?  This is my method.  I have analyzed the …… and want to…..  I bet you are thinking that did not make any sense.  Let’s try it again.  I have analyzed the living room and want to make it more contemporary.  So how do we do that?

When you enter the room you want to remodel what attributes stand out to you?  Is it dark? Is it boring? Does it make you sleepy? Write down everything you feel about this room.  Get input from friends and family members, ask them what do they feel and observe when they enter the space? Now write down what you feel is missing. What characteristics would you like to try and add? Would it feel better if it was brighter or darker?  Does it lack charisma? Could it benefit from a little visual drama? Take pictures of the room you want to remodel.  Take pictures of things and places you like for inspiration.  Take fabric swatches, paint color chips, and all of your magazine clippings, notes and inspirational material to your flooring professional.

Don’t be intimidated with all the choices you may encounter it’s no different than putting an outfit together.  Some of us are masters at coordinating and some of us believe we are.  A woman’s closet may have many black shoes that at first glance appear similar, but usually there are subtle nuances about a certain pair of heels that complement the black dress over the black pants suit.

Now it’s time to decide what type or types of floor covering to use?  If there was carpet on the floor maybe it’s time for wood and or ceramic tile.  Imagine you want white carpet in the front room, but that’s the only way in and out of the house and you fear that traffic will ruin your carpet.  Consider a tile walkway that leads from the front door to the entry way of the next room flanked by marshmallow white carpet on either side. You have your white carpet, but the traffic stays on your ceramic tile walkway subconsciously being ushered to the next room.  Much like a sidewalks that directs pedestrian traffic and keeps feet off of the lush grass growing next to it. Consider a tile floor that has accents and borders to liven things up.  Maybe a nice hand scraped pine floor with its weathered appearance is the answer to give the room the right amount of character to complement your prized sofa.

Pay close attention to the colors and textures of the floor covering you choose.  Make sure it works with the color of the walls?   It should enhance the energy in the room and the overall appearance.  Although a tile is the right color does its texture work with the fabric covering the sofa?  These are just a few things to consider when selecting materials for your home renovation.  The staff of Carolina Tile would be delighted to assist you further.  For more tips check out: www.carolinatile.com/blog.
